Reason Code List / Mastercard / Reason Code 4834 – POI Error / Merchant Refund Correcting Error Resulted in Cardholder Currency Exchange Loss
PREVIEW
A high-level overview
You received this chargeback because you processed a credit instead of a reversal to correct an error and the cardholder experienced a currency exchange loss.
NOTE: The chargeback amount must reflect only the currency exchange loss — not the full transaction amount. This reason code can’t be used in mainland China or for ATM transactions.
This chargeback must be filed within 90 days of the transaction processing date.
If you — the merchant — have the required data and supporting documents, you can fight a Refund Currency Exchange Loss dispute. At most, you will have 45 days to respond.
To avoid this chargeback in the future, always fix processing errors with a reversal instead of a refund.
NOTE
Because this chargeback impacts a small portion of merchants, we aren’t going to elaborate on what causes this dispute or how to respond. If you are a merchant or acquirer and need additional details about this reason code, we recommend you consult the latest version of the Mastercard chargeback guide. You’ll find a section on Refund Currency Exchange Loss chargebacks in chapter 2 (dual message system chargebacks).
